This city can be traced back from before the Stone Age to 250 BC, at this time the area was made up of seven islands known as Heptanesia. This land has been host to many religious battles and non-religious battle since. Most of the historic buildings, statues and ancient places of interest can still be seen today. Some of the most stunning are The Elephanta Caves and Walkeshwar temple complex which can both be traced back to 1343. From 1817 city went under major civil engineering works which were aimed at connecting all the islands to create one land mass, in 1845 this project was completed.
